Offering individual therapy in groups, a different way to expereince relationship counselling.

How group based relationship therapy helps

We are open to help individuals, couples and families online - we can offer groups via Zoom, enquire by email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Tavistock Relationships is offering spaces in an established therapeutic group for those who would like to develop a deeper understanding of their relationship patterns.

Whether you are currently in a relationship, have gone through a recent break- up, or simply would like to understand more about your important relationships, group therapy can support you in working through these issues. Our relationship-focused therapy group can address newly emerging or entrenched difficulties in achieving intimate adult relationships and is a powerful, long-established and highly effective way to bring about meaningful insight with a potential to change.

Group sessions can be particularly helpful for those who would like to develop a deeper understanding

Group therapy offers another way to look at your relationship

Group sessions can be particularly helpful for those who would like to develop a deeper understanding of what might have gone wrong following a break-up of a recent relationship, or trying to make sense of things in the aftermath of separation or divorce. The group will also support you in exploring recurring troubling relationship patterns and can address difficulties in achieving or maintaining intimate adult relationships.

In group therapy up to eight people meet weekly together with a highly trained specialised therapist. The group meets at the same time each week for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Seeing things from a different angle made me realise certain ways in which I shouldn't have been treated in my relationship

How to join

Initially the group therapist will meet with you individually so they can get to know you, and think with you whether group therapy is indeed the way forward. If group therapy is offered then you may have to wait for a place to become available,

We aim to make group therapy as accessible as possible to our clients and the fees are currently set at £35 per person per group.

Our core therapeutic model has been developed over more than 70 years. It combines professional expertise and in-depth theoretical knowledge with research and the training of therapists and is described in the video here.

A number of innovative psychotherapy approaches has stemmed from this core method. These approaches help with a range of relationship difficulties, psychosexual problems, parenting issues, separation and divorce, and are applied to other specialised programmes.

How does it work?

Our work with you starts with an initial consultation with a counsellor or psychotherapist.

You can choose to attend with your partner or alone. At this session you’ll have the chance to talk through any concerns and ask any questions about how the counselling process works.

People generally find this initial consultation very helpful.

If you then want to take things forward we’ll agree a time that works, with sessions delivered on a weekly basis. You can read more about the counselling process here.

Please be aware

Clients will need to share information such as whether they have children and certain local medical details. All information is dealt with in confidence and with maximum security.

How much does it cost?

What is your fee structure?

Tavistock Relationships is a not-for-profit training institution specialising in couple therapy and psychoanalytic practice.

We are highly trained and experienced practitioners in couple and individual therapy and use a range of methods to support our clients. Some of our services are provided by therapists in advanced training under the supervision of a highly qualified and experienced clinician.

Our international rates are £180 per session.

Does couple therapy work?

We know that couple therapy works; evidence proves it.

A few years ago, we published the largest ever study of couple therapy for adults, showing that it is highly effective at improving relationships and reducing individual psychological distress. You can read more here.

What’s the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

At Tavistock Relationships we work with you in your initial appointment to find the help that is right for you, but in case you are wondering here are two simple definitions

Psychotherapy delivered by a psychotherapist – A term given to anyone who treats psychological distress through some kind of non-medicine therapy. They don’t have to be psychiatrists or psychologists and often have done long, thorough trainings as at Tavistock Relationships, meeting professional standards. Psychotherapists are often interested in looking deeply into the background of the clients, in order to understand more about how this may be affecting their current problems.

Counselling provided by a counsellor – A title given to anyone who treats emotional or life distress through some kind of non-medicine talking treatment. They tend to be lighter-touch in their approach than psychotherapists, looking at the present issues, and their training tends to be shorter. Anyone can call themself a “counsellor” but Tavistock Relationships has a particular definition, and training that meets specific Professional Body standards.

Help with sexual problems

Psychosexual therapy can improve relationships

Sexual problems may be longstanding, or related to more recent events which have caused stress, confusion or unhappiness.

We are open to help individuals, couples and online

Whether you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, heterosexual or transgender, if you are experiencing problems or difficulties in your sexual relationship, our psychosexual therapists can help you resolve them.

This service is often referred to as sex therapy, however what we offer is a slightly different.

Which issues does psychosexual therapy help with?

Many people simply talk about 'sex therapy', but at Tavistock Relationships we offer a deeper type of psychological approach that goes further than simply looking at any physical symptoms, concentrating on the relationship and individual feelings.

The following are some of the problems we address:

  • breakdown in a couple's sexual relationship
  • loss of sexual desire
  • painful intercourse
  • difficulties with orgasm
  • arousal disorders
  • erectile dysfunction
  • premature or delayed ejaculation

How can psychosexual therapy help?

The support you get is specific to you.

People gain a range of benefits from psychosexual therapy depending on their needs and the difficulties they bring. Talking about sexual problems can seem daunting, and most people feel really relieved to discuss the problems that may have been bothering them for some time and this, in itself, can have very beneficial effects on your sex life.

For other people a structured programme of help can resolve problems with painful intercourse, difficulties with orgasm, arousal disorders, erectile dysfunction and premature or delayed ejaculation.

How do I get psychosexual therapy?

It starts with an initial consultation with a trained therapist

We can see you in London at our City Wellbeing Centre near Liverpool Street Station or online. You may decide to come with a partner or on your own.

Once you've booked an initial appointment, you will be seen by an experienced therapist, with further training in psychosexual therapy who will initially discuss your difficulties with you and how best to proceed.

Psychosexual therapy treats the causes as well as the symptoms. In weekly sessions you will have the opportunity to explore why a problem may have arisen and, where appropriate, your psychosexual therapist may offer a specific treatment programme to help you overcome the difficulties you are having.

Fees for psychosexual therapy

The fee for ongoing psychosexual sessions will be discussed and agreed. We have appointments available at standard rate upwards.
